How to Treat Cough and Catarrh Fast at Home in Ghana

How to Treat Cough and Catarrh Fast at Home in Ghana

Cough and catarrh are very common in Ghana, especially during the Harmattan season, rainy season, and when dust is high in Ho, Accra, Kumasi and northern regions. While most cases are caused by the common cold and clear in a few days, they can make sleeping, working and going to school very uncomfortable.

You don’t always need antibiotics. Here are pharmacist-approved home treatments that work fast and safely, and when you should visit a pharmacy or hospital.

What Causes Cough and Catarrh?

Catarrh (runny or blocked nose) and cough usually occur together because mucus from the nose drips to the throat.

Common causes in Ghana include:
– Viral cold and flu – most common
– Harmattan dust and air pollution
– Allergies – to dust, pollen, or cold air from AC
– Sudden weather changes from hot sun to heavy rain
– Sinus irritation

How to Treat Cough and Catarrh Fast at Home

1. Stay Hydrated and Steam
Drink a lot of warm water, not cold. Warm water thins mucus and soothes the throat. Inhaling steam for 5-10 minutes, twice daily helps open a blocked nose. Add a small amount of menthol balm or eucalyptus oil to hot water, cover your head with a towel and inhale. Keep children at a safe distance to avoid burns.

2. Honey, Ginger and Lemon (For Adults and Children Above 1 Year)
A warm mixture of ginger, honey and lemon is effective for soothing a dry or irritating cough. Honey coats the throat and ginger has natural anti-inflammatory properties. Do NOT give honey to babies under 1 year.

Recipe: Slice fresh ginger, boil in water for 5 minutes, add 1 teaspoon honey and a few drops of lemon after it cools slightly.

3. Salt Water Gargle and Nasal Rinse
For sore throat and catarrh, gargle warm salt water 2-3 times daily. For a blocked nose, use a saline nasal spray or rinse from the pharmacy. It clears mucus without causing drowsiness.

4. Keep Your Environment Dust-Free
During Harmattan, keep windows closed during dusty hours, damp-dust your room, change bedsheets often and wear a nose mask when outdoors. Avoid very cold air from AC blowing directly on you at night.

5. Rest and Eat Light
Your body recovers faster when you rest. Avoid very oily, overly spicy food and cold drinks which can irritate the throat more. Eat warm soups, fruits rich in Vitamin C like oranges, and light meals.

When to Seek Medical Care

Go to a clinic or speak to our pharmacist immediately if you have:
– Cough lasting more than 10 days or with thick green/yellow phlegm
– High fever above 38.5°C for more than 2 days
– Difficulty breathing, chest pain or wheezing
– Catarrh with severe headache and facial pain
– Cough and catarrh in a baby under 6 months
– Coughing up blood

These may be signs of a chest infection, sinus infection or asthma that needs medical review.

Pharmacist’s Tip: The fastest way to recover is to combine home care with early pharmacy advice. Don’t mix many different cough syrups together. Bring your current medicines to Citi Pharmacy so we can check for interactions.

FAQs

1. What is the fastest way to clear catarrh at home in Ghana?
The fastest combination is steam inhalation twice daily, drinking plenty of warm water, and using a saline nasal spray from the pharmacy. Keeping your room dust-free during Harmattan also helps mucus clear faster within 2-3 days.

2. Can I use antibiotics for cough and catarrh?
No. Most cough and catarrh cases in Ghana are caused by viruses or dust allergy, not bacteria. Antibiotics will not help and can cause resistance. Only use antibiotics if a doctor prescribes them after examination.

3. What home remedy works for cough at night?
Raise your head with an extra pillow to reduce mucus dripping, drink warm honey-ginger tea before bed (adults and children >1 year), and use a menthol rub on your chest. Avoid cold water and very cold AC at night.

4. When should I give my child cough syrup?
Many cough syrups are not recommended for children under 6 years. For children, focus on warm fluids, saline nose drops for blocked nose, and honey (only if above 1 year). Visit Citi Pharmacy or your paediatrician for an age-appropriate recommendation.
