Headache That Won’t Go Away: 7 Causes and When to See a Doctor

That dull throbbing in your head that just won’t quit is more than annoying — it can mess with your work, sleep, and mood. While most headaches go away with rest and water, some linger for days.

If you’ve been asking “why won’t this headache go away?”, you’re not alone. Here’s what could be causing it and when it’s time to see a doctor.

7 Common Causes of Persistent Headaches

1. Tension Headaches
The most common type. Caused by stress, poor posture, eye strain, or lack of sleep. It feels like a tight band around your forehead. They can last from 30 minutes to several days.

2. Dehydration
Not drinking enough water is a big trigger in Ghana’s heat. Even mild dehydration can cause headaches that don’t respond well to painkillers until you rehydrate.

3. Migraines
Migraines can last 4 to 72 hours. They’re often one-sided, throbbing, and come with nausea, light sensitivity, or visual “auras.” Some people also get “chronic migraine” — 15+ headache days per month.

4. Medication Overuse Headache
Ironically, taking painkillers like paracetamol, ibuprofen, or combination meds too often — more than 10-15 days a month — can cause a rebound headache that keeps coming back.

5. Sinus Issues
Sinusitis or allergies cause pressure in your forehead, cheeks, and around your eyes. The headache gets worse when you bend forward and often comes with nasal congestion.

6. High Blood Pressure
Severe hypertension can cause a persistent, pounding headache, usually at the back of the head. It’s often paired with blurred vision or nosebleeds. This needs urgent attention.

7. Lack of Sleep / Poor Sleep Quality
Sleep deprivation, sleep apnea, or irregular sleep patterns trigger headaches that linger. Your brain needs sleep to reset pain pathways.

When Should You See a Doctor?

Don’t ignore a headache that’s new, severe, or won’t go away. See a doctor right away if you have:
• Sudden “worst headache of your life”
• Fever, stiff neck, rash, or confusion
• Headache after a head injury
• Vision changes, weakness, or trouble speaking
• Headache that lasts >3 days despite OTC meds
• New headaches if you’re pregnant or over 50

At Citi Pharmacy, our pharmacists can help you assess symptoms and recommend the right OTC options. But if red flags appear, we’ll refer you to a doctor immediately.

How to Get Relief at Home

Hydrate: 2-3L of water daily, especially in hot weather
Rest: 7-8 hours of sleep in a dark, quiet room
Manage stress: Deep breathing, stretching, limit screen time
Use OTC pain relief properly: Paracetamol or Ibuprofen as directed. Avoid daily use
Cold/heat pack on forehead or neck for tension headaches

Always read the label and ask a pharmacist before combining medications.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Is it normal to have a headache for 3 days straight?

Occasional 3-day tension headaches or migraines can happen. But if it’s severe, new, or not improving with rest and meds, see a doctor to rule out other causes.

2. Can dehydration really cause a headache?

Yes. Even 2% dehydration can trigger headaches. In Ghana’s climate, aim to sip water regularly, not just when thirsty.

3. What’s the difference between migraine and tension headache?

Tension headaches are dull, tight, and on both sides. Migraines are throbbing, often one-sided, and come with nausea, light/sound sensitivity.

4. Can I take painkillers every day for my headache?

No. Using painkillers more than 10-15 days a month can cause “rebound” headaches. Talk to a pharmacist about safer long-term management.
