October Breast Cancer Awareness Month: Early Detection Saves Lives – Get Checked at Bluesky Medical Center

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a global movement dedicated to raising awareness, showing support, and promoting early detection of breast cancer. At Bluesky Medical Center Ltd., we join the world to say: Stronger Together Against Breast Cancer.

The message is simple and powerful: Know your breasts. Get checked.

Breast Cancer Can Affect Anyone

Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women worldwide, but it can affect anyone. The good news is, when it’s detected early, treatment works and lives can be saved.

In Ghana, many cases are reported late due to lack of screening and awareness. Regular self-examination and clinical screening can help detect changes long before they become life-threatening. Early detection doesn’t just save lives – it also means less aggressive treatment and better outcomes.

Why Early Detection Matters

  • Better survival rates: Cancers found early are more likely to be small and have not spread.
  • More treatment options: Early-stage cancers often require less extensive treatment.
  • Peace of mind: Knowing your breast health status helps you take charge of your health.

At Bluesky, we believe every woman deserves a healthier tomorrow. That’s why we’re making screening more accessible this October.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1. What is a breast ultrasound and who needs it?

A breast ultrasound uses sound waves to create images of the inside of your breasts. It is recommended for women under 40 with dense breast tissue, women who feel a lump, have breast pain, nipple discharge, or as a follow-up to other screening. It is also suitable for routine checks if recommended by your doctor.

2. Is breast ultrasound safe? Does it have radiation?

Yes. Breast ultrasound is completely non-invasive and safe. Unlike mammograms or X-rays, it does not use radiation. It is painless and can be done even for pregnant or breastfeeding women.

3. How often should I get my breasts checked?

You should do a self-breast exam every month. A clinical breast exam by a healthcare professional is recommended once a year. For ultrasound/mammogram frequency, your doctor will advise based on your age, family history, and risk factors. For women 20-39, every 1-3 years; 40+ annually.

4. What is the difference between breast ultrasound and mammogram?

A mammogram uses low-dose X-rays and is best for women over 40. Ultrasound uses sound waves, has no radiation, and is better at seeing lumps in dense, young breasts. In many cases, both are used together for more accurate detection. Your doctor will advise which is best for you.
